Burn the City Review
Finally! Here is my first app review: Burn the City it was a long time coming! There is a spot in the review were sound blanks out so I'm also posting my rough dialogue.
In Burn the City, a physics puzzler/destruction game you play as a baby Godzilla-type monster that has just hatched only to find that your mother and all your siblings are gone. You see the direction that they went and you head after them, destroying every city you come across on the way. If this creature is so big immediately upon hatching, I don’t want to know how big the mother is!
The game is a reminder of Angry Birds, in that you are firing shots from fixed position with the goal of destroying something, only you are tasked with destroying every single bit of the city rather than anything specific. It controls more like Worms though, in the way you aim, choose your angle, and adjust the power of your shot. As you progress through the levels, more mechanics are added, such as bouncy terrain, wrecking balls, and force fields. You also get the ability to consume “Yums” in order to enhance your shots, making them more explosive or giving them massive range. All of these elements work well together, and when you pull off the perfect chains of destruction, it’s extremely satisfying to watch the fireworks. Every level rates you, granting you bronze, silver, and gold medals. Figuring out the perfect shots to get the gold on each level will require you to think out of the box, and it’s even more satisfying than usual.
The graphics and effects are great, even though the camera can extremely annoying. It always follows fireballs unless you stop it, and sometimes you just want to keep firing them, as there is no penalty for using numerous shots, unlike the limited shots of Angry Birds. If you need to send another fireball at, a moving target quickly you will find difficult. This became so annoying that during filming I through my iPod at my sister who was laughing at my terrible shots. I love how the fireballs and explosions are offset from the dark backgrounds and environments. It’s a very good looking game. There is already another batch of levels on the way. I rate it 4 out of 5 iPhones.
